AL5052 is one of the best-forming grades in the aluminum-magnesium alloy family, well suited to stamping and bending operations while offering good corrosion resistance and moderate strength. For a bracket whose primary manufacturing process is press brake bending, 5052’s higher elongation compared to 6061 is a practical advantage — it bends cleanly without cracking at the bend radius, even through multiple sequential bends.

The Challenge: Accuracy After Multi-Bend Cantilever Forming

The finished part is a three-dimensional bent structure, and the cantilevered sections formed after bending are narrow and relatively long — low cross-sectional moment of inertia, limited overall stiffness. In that structural context, multiple sequential bends create three overlapping accuracy problems:

  • Springback: Aluminum plate springs back elastically after the press brake releases. The actual angle is larger than the die angle, requiring a compensated overbend for every single step
  • Overall twist: If the bend sequence or direction isn’t carefully planned, cumulative angular offsets across multiple bends can cause the whole bracket to end up twisted rather than square
  • Hole-to-bend-datum positional accuracy: Irregular holes cut before bending shift relative to their nominal positions once the plate is formed, which directly affects how accurately the bracket locates the components it’s designed to hold
