CNC Machined Lightweight Hollowed Cover Plate

  1. Material: AL6061
  2. Size: 266X10X81 mm
  3. Process: CNC Machining
  4. Surface treatment: Red Anodizing

This is a lightweight hollowed cover plate. It is a long, irregular plate with rounded edges and several triangular and elongated cutouts across the face. It is milled in one piece on a CNC machine and finished with red anodizing.

The part has to balance structural stiffness against weight reduction, and both the flatness of the plate and the cosmetic quality of the profile matter. It is a precision plate part that serves as both a decorative and a structural component.

Anodizing

Machining Challenges

  • After large cutouts are made, the remaining ribs are narrow and the plate loses overall rigidity. It tends to chatter while cutting, and the plate can warp and pick up chatter marks.
  • There are many sharp corners and long, narrow slots, so step marks easily appear at corners. With strict cosmetic requirements, the toolpath and tool entry method must be carefully controlled.
  • A lot of material is removed, and internal stress release can distort the plate. Holding flatness consistently is difficult.
  • Red anodizing is very sensitive to surface roughness. Tool marks from machining show up directly in the anodized surface and affect color uniformity.
  • A long, thin plate is easily bent by poorly controlled clamping force. It then springs back once the clamps are released.

How It’s Managed

IssueApproach
Internal stress and distortionLayered roughing with even stock left on; stress relief after roughing, then semi-finishing and finishing
Step marks and surface roughnessClimb milling, with arc lead-in and lead-out at corners to reduce step marks; high-polish aluminum tooling to control surface roughness
Clamping distortion and weak ribsVacuum chuck with multi-point suction to reduce clamping stress; temporary tie ribs left in weak rib areas and cut off at the end of finishing
Vibration and color consistencyShallow depth of cut and high spindle speed on finish passes to reduce cutting force; surfaces cleaned thoroughly before anodizing for an even color
Flatness checkFlatness measured in the free state after machining, with distortion tightly controlled
